Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient Japanese technique which involves a practitioner channeling energy and directing it to people or animals. Reiki has no association with any religion or faith and can be received by anyone who would like to experience this energy. It is a safe treatment; the person will only get what they can handle or need. Reiki is suitable for adults, elderly people, children and babies.
What Can I Expect During a Treatment?
A full treatment lasts 1 hour. The client remains fully clothed during the treatment. Reiki can be received lying down or sitting in a chair. The practitioner will place their hands on, or above, the client’s body.
The sensation’s experienced as the Reiki energy is received can range from intense heat, chills, cold, tingling, pressure and some people see colours.
For most people, receiving Reiki is a deeply relaxing experience which promotes a feeling of well-being and peace. For others it can be an opportunity for emotional release, a chance to talk, or they may simply fall asleep.
What Conditions May Reiki Help With?
Reiki may help to cleanse the body of toxins, relieve pain, soothe shock, or calm the mind. Everyone’s experience and their reaction to Reiki is different and no two treatments per person will be the same. There are many conditions which may benefit from Reiki, a few of which are:

How many treatments do I need?
How many treatments you need is entirely up to you, it is an individual decision. Depending on the person one treatment may be sufficient for their needs if they are, for example, mildly stressed. Others with chronic, or long-term conditions may benefit from a course of treatments over a longer period of time and some may choose to have a treatment regularly every few weeks. It is invariably the case that when you have had a treatment you instinctively know whether you need, or would like, another treatment.
After your treatment
During a treatment toxins may be released, and afterwards the body will try to eliminate these. The following aftercare advice may assist your body in that process.
It is advisable that you take it easy for the rest of the day so that your body can gain optimum benefit from the treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise. If you feel sleepy, listen to your body and sleep. this can help your healing process.
Ensure that you drink adequate water. The recommended daily amount is 2-3 litres per day. Drinking adequate water may help to flush any toxins released, during the treatment, through your system quicker.
Avoid alcohol and smoking as this may place further toxic stress on your body, as it strives to heal itself.
Eat light meals so that your body can focus on healing, rather than digesting heavy foods.
It can take a few days after the treatment for the energy to be integrated. During this time some people may experience a temporary worsening of pre-existing symptoms or other symptoms, such as those listed below. These are often taken as signs that the treatment is working as symptoms are moving to the surface to be cleared. Some of these signs and symptoms are:
- Weepiness; feeling emotional
- Increase in energy and motivation
- Flu or Cold Symptoms
- Visiting the toilet more frequently
- Increased thirst
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Digestive disturbances such as nausea, flatulence or changes in bowel movements
- Increase in perspiration and body odour
