Indian Head Massage, sometimes known as Champissage, originated from the Ayurvedic tradition in India. As a family practise,  mothers would massage their children, and women would massage each other’s hair for the benefits gained in relaxation and improved condition of the hair. It is a nurturing massage. Indian Head Massage was introduced to the UK in the 1970s. It has become a popular treatment and is suitable for the workplace, as the treatments last less than an hour.

What Can I Expect During a Treatment?
During this treatment the client has a choice of wearing a light top or t-shirt, with the massage done over the clothing, or they may prefer to remove their upper clothing (with a towel used to ensure modesty) and oils used directly on the back. The client stays seated upright in a low backed chair. The back, arms, neck, head and face areas are all massaged.
How  may Indian Head Massage help the neck, shoulders & head?

If there is poor posture from sitting at the computer, reading or watching television Indian Head Massage may help to ease tension in the neck.  Some people tilt their head forward and the neck muscles then tense up to take the weight of the head.  Massaging this area may help someone with a stiff neck to move their head about more freely.

The shoulders are a common place for people to hold tension and people may stiffen there as a consequence. Massaging the shoulders may help to release anxiety or trapped energy and also increase mobility. Stiffness in the shoulders may cause imbalances throughout the body and have a knock on effect by restricting the ribs and therefore the breathing. It may also slow down the circulation and create headaches and impaired digestion.

The head is covered in a fine layer of muscles which can tense up when anxious and lead to ‘tension headaches’ and migraines. Stress can appear as tightness around the mouth, forehead and eyebrows. During concentration our forehead and temples areas can become tight and congested which may limit blood flow leading to eyestrain and tension headaches.  Massage to the head may improve this flow.

After Your Treatment

Leave oil in your hair for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight. If left on overnight cover your pillow with a towel to prevent oil staining the bedclothes. In the morning apply shampoo neat without wetting your hair first. Wash shampoo, and oil, out as normal. You may need to repeat this process.
Do not drink alcohol or smoke for the next 24 hours. Your body may be trying to rid itself of toxins which can be released during a treatment. Drinking or smoking could place additional burden on the liver and kidneys as the body attempts to cleanse itself .
Ideally we should drink 2-3 litres of water over the course of a day. Drinking sufficient water will hopefully flush through any toxins released during the treatment through the body quicker.
Take it easy for the rest of the day if you can. Your body is trying to detoxify, rebalance or healing. Avoid strenuous exercise. If you feel sleepy, listen to your body and sleep,  this  can help the healing process.
Eat light meals so that your body can focus on healing, rather than digesting heavy foods.
